Creating custom bookmarked playlists
Surfing the radio playlists in the folders on the device can be time-consuming. Obviously you want to bookmark your favourites but there seems to be no way to do this with the remote control device. This is how to overcome this.
The 'Easy' Way
- Download your PLS playlist file (.pls) from http://www.shoutcast.com/ or other source
(Works with M3U playlists as well) - Default name of downloaded playlist is shoutcast-playlist.pls so rename it to the radio station name of your choice
- Create a folder on your Mvix HDD called 'Radio' or place it on your network and share this folder
- Copy all your radio station PLS or M3U files to this folder
- On MVIX do a folder refresh, navigate to the 'Radio' folder and select what you want to play
The 'Hard' way
Required:
- A 'modded' firmware version with FTP added;
- An FTP program installed on your PC;
- A fair knowledge of FTP.
- Open the Radio connection and navigate to a streaming link you like
- Open the link
- On your PC start an FTP connection to the device
- Go to /tmp/irad/ (the_folder_you_opened_the_streaming_link_in - I think it is the tmp/irad/ folder)
- There will be a temporary file in the folder named 1234.plsx. Highlight it and get/download it to your PC
- Now with the MX-7x0HD connected to your PC by USB, create a folder for your custom radio links
- Copy/paste all the radio links you downloaded via FTP from the tmp/irad folder into the folder you created on the HDD
- The files will have a '.plsx extension.' This needs to be changed to '.pls'.
Also you may want to change the name of the file as well to the name_of_the_radio_station.pls
You now have a custom folder with bookmarked radio links.
Sample PLS file
[playlist] numberofentries=1 File1=http://aacplus-vr-32.smgradio.com:80 Length1=-1
For more details on the PLS file structure, see this PLS file format article on Wikipedia
Basically, all you need to do is to load this file into a text editor (such as Notepad), replace the link on the File1= line with your preferred internet radio station and then put this file onto your Mvix' hard drive.
Beware that there is a known problem with Firmware version 2.0.2 that causes the player to stop responding when playing such a playlist. To recover, press the POWER button on the unit for a few seconds, then the unit should turn off after releasing the button.
Create a radio station keyword search
The User Folder's built-in radio structure can be customised for personalised searching options:
- Copy/paste the following to Notepad and save as an .irad file
- Copy this file to the root of the MX-760HD hard drive
- You can change the names "South Africa, Brazil, R&B, Jazz" to keywords or favourite server name etc.
#User sample file #Copy to root folder of internal HDD #See RADIO/User folder #examples of keywords South Africa Brazil R&B Jazz
Things to add:
- links to FTP program,
- modded firmware,
- link to FTP How-to guide
