What's new
This model is the successor of the previous MX-760HD.
These are the main feature differences in the MX-780HD over its predecessor:
- Hardware
- HDMI output combining HD digital video and digital audio signals within a single connector. (This replaces the MX-760HD's DVI output which only allows for the HD digital video feed - digital audio has to be connected via a separate optical or coaxial cable on the MX-760HD);
- SATA HDD connectors, also including PATA (IDE) connectivity (The MX-760HD only has IDE HDD connectors, although a SATA-to-IDE adapter plug is available to close the generation gap - look at the mods page for more);
- Extractor fan is slightly larger at 25mm in diameter (some MX-760HD owners using network storage have reported no issues over a year's use having disconnected the fan - this is not the recommendation of this article, but should one choose to do so then it would be advisable to remove the plastic internal HDD housing to improve the circulation of air);
- Casing comprises a plastic lid with air vents on top, but the overall design is still the same (The MX-760HD's lid is aluminium without air vents, thus not allowing for an incoming flow of cool air);
- Colouring of the MX-780HD is all black;
- LEDs are all blue (where the MX-760HD has a blue power LED and the rest are green;
- Firmware
- User interface screens are purple in colour (vs the MX-760HD's blue-coloured GUI screens);
- Internet Radio & TV (Internet TV is currently Beta) functionality is now available to both the MX-760HD and MX-780HD (Unicorn's original 760-1.2.0 firmware did not originally support these features - firmware version 760-1.2.1 now includes said features to bring it in line with that of firmware 780-2.0.3);
- NDAS technology is innately supported (for NDAS support on MX-760HD one needs to upgrade the firmware to at least v1.1.27 or better);
- (Today MX-760HD can assume the same functionality as the MX-780HD by upgrading the firmware and even adopt purple GUI colours using hacked MX-780HD firmware)
- Other
- The MX-780HD price is just a little higher than MX-760HD.
Should you require any further background on this product, kindly refer to the MX-760HD pages until such time as those pages have been linked to this page. (The 2 products are essentially the same aside from the differences mentioned above).
You will note from some of the dialogue contained in these pages that these players are referred to as MX-7X0HD due to their being essentially the same product under the skin.
